IT''S TIME TO PUT DOWN THE TOYS.

It’s just 2:10 in the afternoon, and I’m already a wreck after dealing with several exasperating websites seemingly designed to frustrate than to help me, my brother’s near-fatal alcoholism and the horrendous logistics imposed by a hospital all too eager to eject him prematurely, and an exasperatingly smug operator at my credit card bank’s service center.
I feel agitated. At least my pulse rate has gone back to normal. I try to find the balance in my life, but on days like this, it can be so hard to achieve and maintain.
It’s deeply disturbing: all these modern conveniences, all this time-saving, trouble-saving technology, and we’re all more miserable than ever.
And it’s going to get a lot uglier. America is beginning to fall apart, and the powers-that-be are twisting the thumbscrews ever harder to the citizenry. If someone as smart, frugal, and time-oriented as I is having so much trouble seeing through all the complications and B.S., what chance has the average Joe with a family, a full-time job, and a lot more complexity to his life?
I’m not really an activist, just a writer with a lot on his mind who is tired of being told what to do and where to go by a bunch of Borg-drones who have less and less training, concern, and accountability as time marches by at a frenetic clip.
It’s time to put down the toys.
Put Down The Toys’ objective is to establish an annual, national day of celebration and sacrifice. That’s why I’ve set up this website. The Internet is one of the safest yet most effective places to stage a revolution. If we can start with one day a year of taking ourselves off the hamster-wheel and getting back to human-based values, maybe the notion will catch fire and we’ll begin to examine more critically our choices about how we lead our lives, or perhaps allow our lives to lead us.
Here are some ways I envision National Put Down The Toys Day:
- Turn off the TV, the video game, the computer, the cell phone, anything with a screen on it. Then go outside and take a walk somewhere pleasant. See people. Say hello. - Instead of getting into your car, get outside for real. Go for a walk, a hike, a job, a bicycle ride, some kind of active movement that engages your entire body. Stretch. Breathe deeply. Dance. - Those are my thoughts off the top of my head in the midst of a busy day. If you want to be a part of this, or just contribute another idea or two, by all means email me. My email address is verbose AT comcast.net.
